Photography
For anyone interested, here is my kit list that I usually use:
Camera
Canon EOS 70D (90D)
At the time of writing, this has been superseded by the 90D (links below). I love this camera as it’s super fast and responsible, very flexible, and does everything I need really well. It’s a top of the line compact D-SLR, and while it’s not cheap, even without the lenses, it’s a fraction of the price of a similarly well specced full-frame D-SLR.
Some shots from California are with my Samsung Galaxy S9.
Lenses
Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM
This is my go-to everyday lens, the optics are superb, it’s reasonably fast, and covers a decent range of focal lengths.
Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM
I use this for landscape stuff and wide shots. It’s not as fancy as the one above, as it lacks image stabilisation, but a superb lens when you need to fit lots in the picture.
Bags
If possible I like to use a non-professional looking messenger bag, it doesn’t scream ‘please rob me’. The one I used on this trip is a Kattee canvas messenger, links to Amazon below. It’s lightweight and flexible, well made, and very reasonably priced around £35.
Method
I always shoot in RAW format, and I prefer to do as much in / on camera as possible, so I carry a small selection of filters / gradients but not much else. I tend not to carry a tripod unless I am planning a long-exposure shot as they just get in the way, and draw attention.
I use Adobe Lightroom Classic for all my sorting / processing and Photoshop when necessary.
